How to true a wheel
A wheel is a machine held together by tension, and truing it isn't bending a rim straight — it's re-balancing which spokes pull hardest. Get one counterintuitive thing right and a mild wobble is a ten-minute fix. Know the three faults that aren't.

Here is the fact that makes wheel truing make sense, and almost no guide leads with it: a wheel is a machine held together by tension, not by the stiffness of its rim. The rim on its own is a fairly floppy hoop. What holds it round and centered is thirty-odd spokes, each pulling the rim inward toward its own side of the hub, all of those pulls balanced against one another. Truing a wheel is not bending a bent rim back straight. It is finding the spokes whose pull is wrong and changing it.
Once you believe that, the core move is simple, and it is the whole job: tighten a spoke and it pulls the rim toward its side; loosen a spoke and the rim relaxes away from that side. A wobble to the left is corrected by adjusting the spokes that pull left, in the exact area of the wobble. Everything else on this page is detail stacked on that one sentence.
We have not built or trued a wheel for you to measure. What follows is the published method from two of the most-cited sources in the trade — Park Tool and the late Sheldon Brown — quoted where the wording matters, with the honest limit spelled out at the end. The mechanism: why turning a nipple moves the rim
A spoke runs from a hole in the hub flange out to a nipple seated in the rim. The nipple is a small threaded nut; turning it winds the spoke thread in or out and so changes how hard that spoke pulls. Because each spoke leaves the hub at an angle — alternating spokes anchor on the left flange and the right flange — its pull has a sideways component as well as an inward one. Tighten a left-flange spoke and you add pull toward the left. Tighten its right-flange neighbor and you draw the rim back toward the right.
Radial faults — the rim being out of round, hopping up and down — work on the inward component instead. Park Tool’s guide puts it plainly: the spokes “not only pull the rim left to right, they also pull the rim toward the hub,” which is why a radial correction means tightening “an even number of spokes from both flanges” so you pull the rim inward without dragging it sideways.
This is also why you can never fully separate the two jobs. Every turn of a nipple changes both the sideways pull and the inward pull a little. That is the real reason truing is fiddly rather than hard: not because any single adjustment is difficult, but because each one nudges three things at once, and you are chasing a balance rather than hitting a target.
Lateral, radial and dish: three different kinds of straight
“True” is not one thing. There are three separate ways a wheel can be out, and they are fixed differently.
- Lateral trueness is the one everyone means. Park Tool defines it as “the correction of side-to-side wobbles, or lateral deviations, as the wheel spins.” This is the fault you can usually fix at home.
- Radial trueness is roundness — “the wheel’s roundness, or amount of up and down movement as it spins.” A flat spot or a hop. Harder, because you can tighten a rim into round but you cannot easily loosen a dent out of one.
- Dish is centering: whether the rim sits exactly over the centerline of the hub so the wheel tracks straight in the frame. Park Tool notes the two wheels “should be centered in the frame as well as aligned to one another.” Checking dish properly needs a dishing tool, and getting it wrong means a wheel that is perfectly true and still not straight in the bike.
For a first job at home, aim only at lateral true. It is the most common complaint, the most satisfying to fix, and the one where a small mistake does the least harm. Radial and dish are where the wheel starts fighting back.
The counterintuitive part: which way to turn the nipple
This is where most first attempts go wrong, and it is worth slowing down for. A spoke nipple is a nut, and like any right-hand thread it tightens clockwise when you look at it head-on. The problem is that when the wheel is in a stand or in the bike, you are almost always looking at the nipple from the hub side — from underneath, effectively — so the whole thing is upside down to you.
Park Tool spells out the trap: “Looking from the outside of the rim you will turn the nipple clockwise to tighten and counterclockwise to loosen. Working on a truing stand or bicycle, however, it appears as though you are tightening by turning counterclockwise, since we perceive the nipple as upside down.”
Sheldon Brown’s fix for the confusion is the one to keep in your head: “Imagine you were going to use a screwdriver to tighten a nipple. You would turn it clockwise. Now use the spoke wrench and make the nipple turn the same way.” And the warning that follows: “If you look at it from the direction of the hub, it will seem that you are turning it counterclockwise.” Decide which way is “tighten” before you touch a spoke, test it on one nipple and feel it snug, and only then start work. Half the “I made it worse” stories are somebody loosening every spoke they meant to tighten.
The actual procedure: a lateral true at home
You need a way to hold the wheel and a fixed reference to measure the wobble against. A truing stand is the right tool — it holds the wheel steady and carries adjustable indicators that you creep in toward the rim until they just kiss the high spots. But you do not need one to start.
Both sources describe the same poor-man’s version. Park Tool: “If you don’t have a truing stand, you can use the bike to hold the wheel,” flipping the bike or putting it in a repair stand and making an indicator “by attaching something to the frame like a zip tie.”Sheldon Brown’s variant uses the brakes you already have: “Remove your brake shoes and reverse them so that the rubber faces away from the rim... These nuts will serve as the feelers on a truing stand.” Either way the principle is identical: a fixed point beside the rim, close enough that the wobble scrapes it, so you can see and hear exactly where the rim is out.
Then the loop:
- Spin the wheel and find the worst wobble.Bring your indicator — zip tie, reversed brake pad, or stand feeler — in until it just touches the rim at its closest point. The rim will rub the reference over one section, on one side: that is where it is bent toward, so the spokes on the opposite side are pulling too hard, or the near-side spokes not hard enough.
- Work only at the wobble, and move in small turns.Park Tool’s guideline: “1/4 turn (90°) at a time is a good general guideline... If it appears to be a minor deviation, start with a smaller turn — maybe 1/8 (45°).” Sheldon Brown is firmer for side-to-side work: “don’t turn any spoke more than one-fourth turn at a time.” Eighth-turns feel absurdly small. They are correct. A wheel punishes big grabs.
- Tighten one side and loosen the other to keep total tension steady.Sheldon Brown’s method: “Working only in the immediate area of the bend, tighten the left spokes and loosen the right spokes, keeping the overall tension the same” — for example “tighten each of the left spokes one-fourth turn and loosen each of the right spokes one-fourth turn.” Pulling the rim over by only tightening does work, but it raises tension in that zone and stores up a problem for later.
- Re-spin, re-check, repeat. Chase the biggest remaining wobble, not the one nearest your hand. Stop when the rub is gone, not when you are bored.
This is slow, deliberate, small-input work, and if that temperament sounds familiar it is the same one that dialing in a rear derailleur rewards: tiny adjustments, one variable at a time, a check after every single one. Rush either job and you undo your last good move without noticing.
Overall tension, and why a badly-tensioned wheel won’t stay true
You can get a wheel visually straight and still have a wheel that will not stay straight, because straightness is only half of it. The other half is that the spokes are all pulling with roughly equal, adequate tension. Park Tool is blunt about the consequence: “Wheels with extremely varied spoke tension will not stay true, or straight, for very long,” and a wheel whose spokes are “either too tight or too loose overall can cause problems.”
There is a specific trap here that catches beginners, and Sheldon Brown names it: “Usually when just one or a few spokes are loose, it is because the rim has been bent to ease their tension. In this situation, tightening just the loose spokes will cause the wheel to bend even more, in the same direction.” In other words, a single slack spoke is often a symptom, not the disease. Yank it tight on its own and you drag the rim further out of true.
Two more things make tensioning genuinely hard, and both argue for humility. The first is spoke wind-up: Sheldon Brown’s wheelbuilding guide explains that “when you turn your spoke wrench, the spoke will first twist a bit from the friction of the threads,” so a spoke can be wound up like a spring without the nipple having actually moved. The cure is to overshoot slightly and back off — “you turn the wrench a little farther, then back it up that same little bit” — releasing the twist while keeping the gain. The second is the ceiling: your practical tension limit is set by the hardware, not by feel. As the guide puts it, “if it starts to get hard enough that you have to start worrying about rounding off the nipple with the spoke wrench, you are approaching the maximum.”
Stephen’s honest note:a good wheelbuilder does the tension part by feel and by tone, built over hundreds of wheels, and treats a first-timer’s finished wheel as a starting point rather than a result. Sheldon Brown tells beginners to expect “several hours” and not to try it “all at one sitting.”None of that means you can’t nudge a mild wobble out of an otherwise good wheel at home. It means you should know which of those two jobs you are actually doing before you start turning nipples.
When to stop and take it to a shop
Everything above assumes a fundamentally good wheel with a small fault. The honesty this site runs on requires saying clearly where the home job ends.
- A real buckle or a bent rim. If the rim carries a pronounced kink or an S-bend that no amount of spoke adjustment pulls out, the metal itself is deformed. Park Tool: “If the wheel is not repairable by adjusting spoke tension, the rim has been bent and will need replacement... This process is best left to professional mechanics.”
- Broken or stripped spokes. A replaced spoke has to be tensioned to match its neighbors and the wheel re-trued around it, and a stripped nipple has to be replaced entirely. Sheldon Brown draws the line even for spokes that have quietly worked loose: “that is a job for an experienced wheelbuilder.” And Park Tool offers a memorable rule of thumb for a wheel that keeps snapping spokes: “3 broken spokes = 1 new wheel.”
- A wheel that needs full re-tensioning.Balancing tension across every spoke — as opposed to nudging a couple near a single wobble — is the skill that takes a wheelbuilder years, and it is where an amateur most reliably turns a slightly-off wheel into a badly-off one. Sheldon Brown’s advice for anything past a minor tweak is simple: “If you have a badly damaged wheel of basically good quality, take it to a good wheelbuilder.”
Truing a mild lateral wobble is a genuinely worthwhile home skill, on a par with the other wheel-off basics like fixing a flat. Rebuilding or re-tensioning a wheel is a craft. Knowing the difference — and paying a professional the day you cross it — is what keeps a fixable wheel fixable.
Three kinds of “true”, and which are realistically a home job
A wheel can be out in three different ways, and they are not equally fixable at the kitchen table. The definitions are Park Tool’s; the last column is our honest read of what a careful beginner should attempt.

What actually decides this purchase
Get the right spoke wrench before anything else.A spoke wrench that’s a size too big rounds off the nipple flats on the first hard turn, and a rounded nipple is a shop visit you created. Attempt lateral true only, at first.Side-to-side wobble is the common complaint, the safest to work on, and the one where an eighth-turn in the wrong direction is easily undone. Leave radial hops and dish until you’ve felt how the wheel responds.
Small turns, always.Park Tool’s quarter-turn guideline and Sheldon Brown’s quarter-turn ceiling exist because a wheel reacts to far less input than your hand expects. If a wobble isn’t shifting, take another small turn and re-check — do not make a big one.
Tighten one side, loosen the other. Pulling the rim over with tightening alone raises local tension and creates the next problem. Keeping overall tension roughly constant is what makes the fix hold.
Know the line, and respect it.A visible buckle, a broken or stripped spoke, or a wheel that needs its whole tension balanced is a wheelbuilder’s job. Recognising that on day one is the difference between a cheap fix and an expensive lesson.
Common questions
Which way do I turn a spoke nipple to tighten it?
Clockwise when viewed from the outside end of the spoke — but you almost never see it from there. With the wheel in a stand or the bike you’re looking from the hub side, and Park Tool warns it then “appears as though you are tightening by turning counterclockwise, since we perceive the nipple as upside down.” Sheldon Brown’s trick fixes the confusion: imagine driving the nipple with a screwdriver — that’s clockwise to tighten — then make the spoke wrench turn it the same way. Test it on one spoke and feel it snug before you commit.
Can I true a wheel without a truing stand?
Yes, for a mild lateral wobble. Park Tool says if you don’t have a stand you can use the bike to hold the wheel and make an indicator “by attaching something to the frame like a zip tie.” Sheldon Brown’s version reverses your rim brake pads so the mounting nuts act as feelers beside the rim. Both give you the one thing a stand provides: a fixed reference the wobble scrapes against so you can see exactly where the rim is out. A stand is faster and more precise, not magic.
How much should I turn each spoke?
Much less than feels like it’s doing anything. Park Tool calls a quarter turn (90°) a good general guideline, up to a half turn for a large deviation and as little as an eighth turn (45°) for a minor one. Sheldon Brown is stricter for side-to-side work: never more than a quarter turn at a time. Turn, re-spin, re-check, and repeat — a wheel punishes big grabs by throwing a new problem somewhere else.
Why won't my wheel stay true after I've fixed it?
Almost always uneven tension. Park Tool: “Wheels with extremely varied spoke tension will not stay true, or straight, for very long.” If you pulled the rim straight by only tightening, you left some spokes far tighter than others and it will drift back. There’s also spoke wind-up — the spoke twists before the nipple moves, then slowly unwinds — which is why builders overshoot and back off. A wheel that won’t hold true usually needs its tension balanced, which is a wheelbuilder’s job.
My wheel has a big buckle - can I fix it at home?
Probably not, and forcing it makes things worse. A pronounced kink or S-bend means the rim metal is deformed, and Park Tool is clear that when a wheel “is not repairable by adjusting spoke tension, the rim has been bent and will need replacement... best left to professional mechanics.” The same goes for broken or stripped spokes. Home truing is for nudging a small wobble out of a sound wheel — not for rescuing one that’s taken a real hit.
Is it worth learning to true a wheel, or should I just pay a shop?
Both, honestly. Learning to take a mild lateral wobble out of a good wheel is a worthwhile, low-risk home skill in the same family as fixing a flat — cheap, quick, and satisfying. But re-tensioning or rebuilding a wheel is a craft that takes a builder years, and Sheldon Brown’s advice for a badly damaged wheel of good quality is to take it to a good wheelbuilder. The skill worth owning is knowing which situation you’re in.
