How to choose cycling gloves

The best-studied thing a glove does — take pressure off the nerve that causes handlebar palsy — it does only partway. Which is why fit, pad placement and moving your hands beat buying the most padded pair.

10 to 28%.That is how much a thin padded glove reduced the peak pressure over the ulnar nerve in a controlled cycling study — 36 experienced riders, hands on an instrumented handlebar, measured with and without padding (Slane et al., 2011). Useful. Also modest. In the same study, “a drops hand position induced the greatest hypothenar pressure and most extended wrist posture” — meaning where you put your hands moved the pressure more than the glove did.

Hold onto that ratio, because the entire glove market is built on the opposite claim: that numb hands are a padding problem, and the fix is more gel. The evidence says padding is the smallerlever. So this guide is organised around what you’re actually solving for, and it is honest about the fact that a glove is a comfort-and-protection tool, not a performance one. Nobody ever went faster because of their gloves.

The four real jobs, and only one of them is padding

Strip away the marketing and a cycling glove is bought to do one or more of four things. Knowing which one is yours decides everything else:

  • Crash protection for the palms.In a fall your hands go out first, and bare skin on tarmac or gravel abrades fast. A glove is a wear layer between skin and ground. This is the clearest, least arguable benefit — and it’s the one that decides fingerless versus full-finger.
  • Damping buzz and relieving nerve pressure.The road transmits vibration into your palms, and sustained pressure on the wrong spot causes the numbness and tingling riders call handlebar palsy. This is the job padding is meant to do — and, per the study above, does only partway.
  • Grip when hands are wet. Sweat and rain make bare skin slide on bar tape. A tacky palm keeps your grip honest, and a terry patch on the thumb gives you somewhere to wipe sweat (and your nose) without letting go.
  • Warmth in the cold.A completely different tool with a completely different trade-off — insulation versus dexterity — and it belongs inside a layering system rather than being solved by one thick glove.

Almost every buying mistake comes from choosing a glove for one of these jobs while quietly assuming it’ll cover another. The most padded summer mitt will not keep you warm; the warmest winter glove will cost you brake feel; and the plushest gel palm will not, on its own, cure numb hands. Gloves are a contact-point purchase, and they reward the same skeptical judgement as the other one — see bib shorts, judged the same honest way.

Why “most padded” is the wrong target

The numbness that sends people shopping has a name and an anatomy. Handlebar palsy is compression of the ulnar nerve where it passes through Guyon’s canal at the wrist, the narrow space between the pisiform and hamate bones. Grip the bars — especially with the wrist cocked back — for long enough, or over rough enough ground, and the nerve gets squeezed. The classic symptoms are numbness, tingling and weakness in the ring and little fingers. (The median nerve, on the thumb side, can be involved too; a hand-medicine summary of prevention notes the pressure falls on the ulnar or median nerves.)

Here is the mechanism that the “buy more gel” pitch ignores. Pressure that damages a nerve is force divided by the area it’s spread across. Padding helps by spreading the load — but it only works if it’s thin, compliant, and sitting directly over the nerve. That’s exactly what the Slane study found: the padding that produced the 10–28% reduction was thin, and “slightly better pressure reduction”came from foam than from gel. A thick gel slab does the opposite of what you want — it can bridge the hollow of your palm and concentrate load onto a smaller ridge, it lifts your hand off the bar so you grip harder to feel the controls, and it masks a bar or fit problem you should actually fix. More padding is not more relief; past a point it is less.

Which is why the bigger levers live off the glove entirely. In that study the highest pressures (an average peak of “134-165kPa”over the hypothenar area, unpadded) came from the drops, the most wrist-extended position — so simply changing hand position often matters more than any pad. Hand-therapy guidance stacks up the same way: padded gloves are one item on a list that also includes moving your hands, well-padded bar tape, taking breaks, and a bike fitthat doesn’t dump your weight onto your wrists. The glove is real, but it’s the last 20% of the answer, not the first.

Hands and sit bones are the two pressure problems on a bike, and they behave the same way: the fix is distributing load, not cushioning it. If your hands go numb, look at your saddle and positionlogic and apply it to the front end — support the weight better and you have less pressure to pad away in the first place.

Fingerless (mitts) vs full-finger

This is the first real fork, and it’s decided mostly by where you ride, not by temperature.

Fingerless mittsare the road-in-warm-weather default. They cover the palm — the part that takes the pressure and the part you land on — while leaving the fingers bare for maximum dexterity and airflow. You can work a zip, eat, and feel the levers precisely. The trade is that your fingertips and knuckles are exposed in a crash, which matters far less on smooth tarmac than it does in the dirt.

Full-finger gloves are the default off-road, and the reason is protection, not warmth. Gravel and mountain-bike crashes tend to happen at lower speed but among rocks, roots and brush, and low branches flick at your knuckles all day. Full-finger covers the whole hand, usually with a tougher palm and sometimes knuckle protection. The cost is a little dexterity and a lot more heat, so summer off-road gloves are built thin and vented. For anything technical, the extra coverage is worth the small loss of feel.

Padding placement, materials and closure

Placement beats thickness.If you buy a padded glove, the pad you want is a modest one positioned over the hypothenar pad and Guyon’s canal — the fleshy base of the palm below the little finger, and the heel of the hand — because that is where the nerve gets pinched. Padding smeared uniformly across the whole palm, or bunched under the fingers, adds bulk without targeting the problem and dulls your feel for the controls. Thin and well-placed beats thick and everywhere.

Materials.The palm is the working surface: synthetic suede, leather or a grippy printed silicone, chosen for grip when damp and for durability, since the palm wears out first. The back is about breathability — a light mesh or stretch fabric in summer, a windproof softshell in the cold. Look for a terry-cloth or microfibre patch on the thumb; it is the single most-used feature on any glove and nobody markets it.

Closure and getting them off.Road mitts are often simple pull-on cuffs; many gloves add a small hook-and-loop wrist strap so you can snug the fit. Sweaty fingerless gloves are notoriously hard to peel off — pull-tabs or looped fingers that let you remove them without turning them inside out are a small mercy worth having.

Fit is the whole game.A glove that’s too big bunches into ridges under your palm and creates the exact pressure points you were trying to eliminate; too small and the seams dig in and it constricts. You want it snug with no loose fabric across the palm, fingers reaching the tips without pinching, and seams that don’t sit on a contact point. Try both hands — people are often half a size different — and remember that leather palms give a little as they break in while synthetics mostly don’t. A perfectly fitted unpadded glove will treat your hands better than a badly fitted gel one.

How the choice changes: road, gravel/MTB, winter

Road.Fingerless mitts, thin, breathable, with a tacky palm and a terry thumb. Keep any padding modest and over the heel of the hand. Your bigger wins against numbness are bar tape and moving your hands between tops, hoods and drops — not a thicker pad.

Gravel and MTB.Full-finger for knuckle and fingertip protection, a durable grippy palm, and only light padding — on rough terrain, control and brake feel matter more than cushioning, and a thick pad works against both. Fit needs to be dialled because you’ll be gripping hard and often.

Winter.A different problem entirely, and the one place to think in systems rather than a single glove. Warmth fights dexterity: the warmest lobster or mitt shapes cost you the finger control you need for shifting and braking, so most riders run a thinner, more dextrous glove down to a point and a bulkier windproof one below it. Windproofing on the back of the hand matters more than raw insulation, because you generate your own wind chill. What we haven’t done

We have not tested a single pair of gloves, and there is no ride feel on this page. The one set of numbers here — the 10–28% pressure reduction, the foam-versus-gel result, the wrist-position finding — comes from a published, linked study, not from us. The anatomy of handlebar palsy is quoted from hand-medicine sources and linked too. Everything else is mechanism you can check against your own hands: force spread over area, a nerve in a narrow canal, and a pad that helps only when it’s thin, placed right, and not asked to fix a problem that lives in your fit.

The job you’re solving for — and the bigger lever

A glove contributes to each of these. For three of the four, something else contributes more. Buy the glove for the job that’s actually yours, then fix the bigger lever — which usually isn’t the glove.

Notice the pattern. Only the crash row is a job the glove solves outright. For the other three, the glove helps at the margin and something you already own — your position, your bar tape, your layering — does the heavy lifting. Which is exactly why “most padded” is the wrong thing to shop for.

What actually decides this purchase

Decide the job first. Crash protection points you to full-finger for off-road; numbness points you at fit and position before padding; grip points you at palm material; warmth points you at a system. A glove chosen for the wrong job disappoints no matter how good it is.

Buy fit, not padding. A snug glove with no bunched fabric and seams off the contact points will out-comfort a plush one that fits badly. Try both hands; break-in helps leather and does little for synthetics.

Want less padding than you think. The tested padding that reduced nerve pressure was thin, and foam edged out gel. A thick slab lifts you off the controls, makes you grip harder, and can concentrate pressure rather than spread it.

Fix the front end, then pad it. If your hands go numb, change position more often, look at your bar tape, and check your fit before you spend on gel. The same weight-support logic that fixes a saddle problem reduces the pressure your hands have to absorb.

Match the glove to the discipline.Thin mitts for road, protective full-finger for gravel and MTB, and a dexterity-versus-warmth system for winter — don’t ask one pair to cover all three.

Common questions

Do padded cycling gloves actually stop hand numbness?

They help, partly. In a controlled study, thin padded gloves cut the peak pressure over the ulnar nerve by 10 to 28%, with thin foam doing slightly better than gel — a real reduction, but a modest one. The same study found that hand position (the drops, with the wrist most extended) produced the highest pressures of all. So padding is worth having, but changing your hand position, using well-padded bar tape and sorting your bike fit do more. Numbness is a pressure problem, and the glove is only one of the things pressing on the nerve.

Is more padding or a thicker gel palm better?

No — past a modest amount it’s usually worse. The padding shown to reduce nerve pressure was thin and compliant. A thick gel slab tends to bridge the natural hollow of your palm and concentrate load onto a ridge, lifts your hand off the bar so you grip harder to feel the levers, and hides a fit or bar problem you should actually fix. The pad you want is thin and positioned over the heel of the hand, not a cushion spread across the whole palm.

Fingerless or full-finger gloves?

It’s decided by where you ride, not the temperature. Fingerless mitts are the warm-weather road choice: they protect the palm and let your fingers breathe and feel the controls. Full-finger is the off-road default because gravel and mountain-bike crashes happen among rocks, roots and brush, and low branches catch your knuckles — you want the whole hand covered. Warmth is a separate question answered by winter gloves and layering.

What causes handlebar palsy?

Compression of the ulnar nerve where it runs through Guyon’s canal at the wrist, between the pisiform and hamate bones. Gripping the bars — especially with the wrist bent back — for long periods, or riding rough terrain, squeezes the nerve, and you feel numbness, tingling and weakness in the ring and little fingers. The median nerve on the thumb side can be affected too. It’s a pressure-over-time injury, which is why moving your hands is a genuine prevention step.

How should cycling gloves fit?

Snug, with no loose fabric across the palm, fingers reaching the tips without pinching, and seams that don’t sit on a contact point. Loose gloves bunch into ridges and create the pressure points you were trying to avoid; too-tight ones constrict and dig in. Check both hands, since many people are half a size different, and remember leather palms give a little as they break in while synthetics mostly don’t.

Do I need gloves at all?

Not for performance — a glove won’t make you faster. You buy them for protection (a wear layer for your palms in a fall), comfort (damping buzz and taking some pressure off the nerve), grip when your hands are wet, and warmth in the cold. If none of those is a problem for you on a given ride, you don’t need them. Most riders find at least the crash-protection and grip cases persuasive enough to wear them anyway.
