How to Wash Cycling Kit So It Lasts

Your kit is wicking polyester, a little elastane and a foam pad — none of which likes heat or fabric softener. Wash for those three enemies, not for the dirt, and it keeps working for years.

Your cycling kit is mostly plastic.A summer jersey and a pair of bibs are wicking polyester, a few percent elastane for the stretch, a synthetic foam chamois, silicone leg grippers and a run of glued or heat-bonded seams. Almost nothing in there is a natural fibre, and almost nothing in there likes heat. That one fact decides how the garment should be washed — and it is close to the opposite of how most people wash everything else in the basket.

The thing that wears kit out, then, is rarely the dirt. It is two things riders add to the wash and one thing they do at the end of it: fabric softener, chlorine bleach, and the tumble dryer.Every technical-clothing brand whose care page we read says the same, in almost the same words. The instructions below are theirs, quoted and linked; the reasoning — why each rule exists — is the part the care labels leave out.

What fabric softener actually does to a wicking fabric

Softener is the single most damaging thing most people put on their kit, and they do it on purpose, thinking they are being kind to it. Here is the mechanism. Fabric softener works by depositing a thin, lubricating, waxy coating over the fibres — on a cotton towel that coating is the whole point, because it makes the nap feel plush. A wicking fabric moves sweat by exactly the surface behaviour that coating destroys: moisture is meant to spread along and between the fibres and out to the face of the cloth, where it can evaporate. Lay a water-repellent film over those fibres and the sweat beads and sits instead of spreading.

You do not have to take our word for the effect, because the people who make the clothing say it plainly. Rapha’s care guide warns that softeners leave a “waxy film” on the garment and that this “build-up of waxy residue can impair your garments’ sweat-wicking, quick-drying and high-stretch and water-repellent qualities”. Castelli is blunter: “Do not use a fabric softener! This can destroy wicking and water-repellent treatments.” Pearl Izumi puts softeners in the same bin as perfumes — “products with scents, softeners, etc. will inhibit performance of technical fabrics” — and tells you to reach for a plain detergent with “Clear” or “Free” in the name instead.

The chamois is where this gets expensive. The pad is a moulded synthetic foam faced with a wicking, often antibacterial cloth, and it works the same way the jersey does — by moving moisture away from skin. Softener clogs that face fabric and coats the foam, so the pad that is supposed to keep you dry starts holding damp against you for the whole ride. Why heat is the other enemy

Elastane — Lycra is the best-known brand of it — is the ingredient that gives kit its stretch, its compression and its snap-back to shape. It is also a rubber-like elastomer, and heat is what relaxes and degrades it. A hot wash and, far worse, a hot tumble dryer let that elastic fibre slacken permanently, which is how a snug jersey turns into a baggy one and a supportive bib loses its hold. This is why the brands cap the temperature: Castelli specifies “hand or machine wash on a lukewarm permanent press cycle (max. 30°C / 86°F)”, which is about as warm as it gets in this world.

The dryer does a second kind of damage that has nothing to do with the fibres. The parts of modern kit that are not sewn — bonded seams, heat-transfer logos, reflective trim and the silicone grippers on the leg bands — are held on with adhesives and thermoplastics that soften with heat. Dryer heat is precisely what unsticks them. So the care pages line up against the tumble dryer: Castelli says “hang dry or dry flat. Do not tumble dry.” Rapha says to “avoid tumble-drying your cycling clothes.” Here the brands genuinely diverge, and we will not paper over it: Pearl Izumi does permit a dryer, but only “tumble dry low” with the caveat that the fabric “should not get hot to the touch”, and no dryer sheets. If your own care label allows a cool tumble, fine — but the safe default that satisfies every brand is to skip the machine and let it air-dry.

Chlorine bleach: don’t

Bleach is the third additive on every avoid list, and for once the reason is simple. Chlorine bleach is an aggressive oxidiser that attacks elastane, weakens polyester and eats dyes, and it is no friend of the chamois either. Castelli names it directly, telling you to use a small amount of detergent and “not other products that contain fabric softeners, conditioners, stain removers or bleach”. Stain removers land on that list for a related reason: many are bleach- or enzyme-based and formulated for cotton, not for a compression fabric. If a jersey is stained, a mild detergent and a gentle wash is the ceiling of what you should throw at it.

The routine, start to finish

None of this is complicated once the mechanism is clear. The routine is short:

  • Wash it promptly, not eventually.Sweat is salty and mildly acidic, and leaving it to dry and sit in a hamper for a week gives bacteria time to work on the fabric and the pad. Rapha’s own advice is to “carefully consider how often you need to wash”your most-used garments — but a used chamois is the exception, and we’ll come back to why.
  • Empty the pockets, close everything, turn it inside out.Castelli’s instruction is to “close all zips and Velcro fasteners and turn the garment inside out”; Pearl Izumi says the same about zippers and hook-and-loop. Open zips and Velcro snag and abrade the fabric of whatever they tumble against — including your other kit. Inside-out also puts the sweat side and the chamois where the water and detergent can actually reach them.
  • Cold to lukewarm, gentle cycle.A delicate or permanent-press cycle, cold or no warmer than Castelli’s 30°C / 86°F ceiling. Hot water buys you nothing here and costs you elastane.
  • A small amount of mild liquid detergent. No softener, no bleach, no stain remover.A plain “Free” or “Clear” detergent, as Pearl Izumi suggests, does the core job. Do not overdose it — excess detergent is itself residue that never fully rinses out.
  • Skip the dryer. Air-dry out of direct sun. Hang or lay it flat somewhere ventilated. Keep it out of strong sunlight: Rapha advises storing kit “away from direct sunlight”, and UV is hard on elastic fibres and on colour. For bibs, do not hang them by the shoulder straps — a heavy, wet chamois will stretch the straps out over time. Fold them over a rail so the pad is supported.

If you are washing a winter wardrobe rather than a summer jersey, the same rules apply with more at stake, because the softener film that kills wicking also kills the breathability of the layers you sweat into and rely on to move that moisture outward. The chamois gets its own rule: wash bibs after every ride

Everything above is about longevity. This one is about hygiene, and it is the reason a chamois is the exception to “wash less often.” The pad spends the whole ride pressed against skin, warm and soaked in sweat — a near-perfect culture for the bacteria behind saddle sores and skin infections. A jersey you might re-wear; a used chamois you should not. Wash bibs after every ride, and do not let them marinate in the kit bag until tomorrow. What we can and can’t tell you

We have not lab-tested detergent residue or run a chamois through a wear rig; nobody here has measured wicking before and after a softener wash. What we can do is report where the manufacturers converge, and on this subject they converge almost completely: four independent brands and technical-wash makers, quoted and linked below, all say cold-to-warm, gentle, no softener, no bleach, and go easy on the heat. The single hard number on this page — Castelli’s 30°C / 86°F ceiling — is theirs, not ours. Where they actually disagree, on whether a cool tumble dry is allowed, we have given you both positions rather than pick one. The mechanism is well understood; the routine is boring; and boring, in kit care, is exactly what makes the kit last.

The four things that wear kit out, and what to do instead

None of these is the dirt. Each is something added to the wash or done after it, and each has a manufacturer’s care page telling you to stop — quoted and linked in the sources below.

The pattern is the same in every row: kit care is subtractive.You are not adding a treatment that makes the fabric better — you are removing the things that make it worse. Get the additives and the heat out of the process and a plain, gentle wash does the rest.

What actually decides this purchase

The core of kit care is subtractive.The damage comes from what you add — softener, bleach, heat — so a plain, additive-free mild detergent already does most of the work. That is the honest baseline before any special product enters the picture.

Where a dedicated technical wash earns its place is residue. Nikwax, which makes one, describes the exact problem its product targets: “conventional laundry detergents leave behind a water attractive (hydrophilic) residue” that masks a fabric’s water repellency and makes it “wet out.” A technical wash is formulated to clean without leaving that film and to revive the water repellency and breathability of shells and heavily used garments.

Clean the drawer before you wash. Nikwax’s own directions tell you to “remove all detergent build-up from the detergent dispenser”first — good advice whatever you wash with, because your softener drawer is a reservoir of exactly the coating you are trying to keep off the kit.

Don’t overdose the detergent. More is not cleaner. Excess detergent is residue that never fully rinses out, which is one of the reasons kit can come out of the machine still smelling faintly of last week even though it is technically clean.

The rule of thumb. Plain mild detergent for a summer jersey; a technical wash for waterproof shells, well-worn base layers, or any kit that has started to wet-out or smell even when clean. Neither needs softener, ever.

Common questions

Can I put my cycling kit in the tumble dryer?

The safe answer is no. Dryer heat slackens the elastane that gives kit its stretch and can unstick the bonded seams, heat-transfer logos and silicone leg grippers on modern garments. Castelli says “hang dry or dry flat. Do not tumble dry”, and Rapha says to avoid tumble-drying. Pearl Izumi is the exception and permits a dryer only on “tumble dry low” with the fabric “not hot to the touch” and no dryer sheets. Air-drying flat or hung satisfies every brand.

Do I really need to wash bib shorts after every ride?

Yes — this one is hygiene, not fussiness. The chamois spends the whole ride warm, pressed against skin and soaked in sweat, which is close to ideal conditions for the bacteria behind saddle sores and skin infections. A jersey you can sometimes re-wear; a used chamois you should not. Wash bibs after every ride and don’t leave them to fester in the kit bag.

Why is fabric softener bad for cycling clothes?

Softener works by leaving a waxy, lubricating film on the fibres. On a cotton towel that is the point; on a wicking fabric it is a disaster, because that film stops sweat spreading along the fibres to evaporate. Rapha warns the residue can impair a garment’s “sweat-wicking, quick-drying and high-stretch and water-repellent qualities”, and Castelli says softener “can destroy wicking and water-repellent treatments.” It also clogs the chamois. Skip it entirely.

What temperature should I wash cycling kit at?

Cold to lukewarm, on a gentle or permanent-press cycle. Castelli publishes a ceiling of “max. 30°C / 86°F”, and that is a good rule for kit generally, because hot water accelerates the heat damage to elastane that a hot dryer causes. Hot water does not clean sweat out any better; it just costs you stretch.

My kit still smells after washing — what's wrong?

Usually residue, not dirt. Fabric softener and over-dosed detergent both leave a film that traps odour-causing bacteria in the fabric, so the smell returns as soon as the kit warms up again. Stop using softener, use less detergent, and clean out the machine’s detergent drawer — Nikwax advises removing all detergent build-up from the dispenser. If it persists on well-worn base layers, a technical wash is formulated specifically to strip that residue.
