A pad is chosen by your caliper before it is chosen by anything else. Here is how to read the two rival fitment systems, and eight pads ranked inside the shapes that actually fit road, gravel and commuter bikes.

A low-cost spare for a hybrid or e-bike you are not precious about

There is no such thing as a best disc brake pad, and any page that ranks pads without first asking what caliper you own is selling you something. A pad is a shape before it is a compound and a compound before it is a brand. Get the shape wrong and nothing else matters: the pad will not go in, or worse, it will go in badly.

Park Tool states the position plainly on its service page — pads are caliper-specific, and the correct procedure is to “look up your specific caliper model on the manufacturer’s website to find the correct pads”. It allows a fallback for when you cannot: “look for a replacement pad that looks identical in shape to your old pads. If it’s the same shape, it’ll likely work.” Note the word likely. That is the state of this category.

Two makers, two fitment languages, neither translated

The reason pad buying is harder than it should be is that the two companies who make most of the brakes on the road describe fitment in completely different systems, and neither system appears on the aftermarket packaging.

Shimano publishes a type letter. Its brake pad line-up table lists B, G, J, K, L, N, D, H and P types, each with its own model codes, and then names every caliper each one fits. The L-type is the current road and GRX shape. The G-type is the two-piston mountain and trekking shape that most hybrids use. They are not interchangeable and the table shows it caliper by caliper.

SRAM publishes a size name. Its pad overview states that pads come in five sizes — “Small Asymmetric, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large” — and identifies compounds by backing-plate color rather than by code. There is no letter to look up, and there is no conversion between the two systems because they are describing different things.

Everyone else publishes a list of calipers.The aftermarket sells on compatibility strings: “for Shimano B01S B03S B05S”, “Fits SRAM RED AXS, Force AXS, Rival AXS”. That is the most directly useful format of the three, and it is also the one with nobody standing behind it.

The one published number worth buying on

Shimano’s line-up table carries a single sentence that changes a purchase, and almost nobody repeats it: “‘05’ pad is more durable than ‘03’ pad in the same type by 40%”.

Read that carefully. A BP-L03A-RF and a BP-L05A-RF fit the same calipers, are both resin, both have aluminum back plates, and sit next to each other on the same search page at similar prices. Shimano is telling you one of them lasts substantially longer. The same applies to the G03S against the G05S further down this page. It is the closest thing to a performance figure this category publishes, it comes from the company that makes both parts, and it is free to act on.

That is the whole reason two of our eight picks are “05” pads. Not because we measured anything — we measure nothing — but because the manufacturer published a comparison between two of its own products and we are passing it on.

Compound comes second, and it is not a ladder

Once the shape is settled you get one real choice: resin and organic on one side, metal and sintered on the other. It is tempting to read that as cheap versus premium. Neither maker does. SRAM describes organic pads as producing “less noise, and require less time to bed-in”, and sintered pads as excelling “in all conditions, especially in wet and muddy environments”, with organic explicitly “not the best choice for wet or muddy conditions”. Two compounds, opposite strengths, no winner named.

We work that through properly in organic versus sintered disc brake pads, which is the page to read if the compound is the part you are stuck on. What belongs here is the buying consequence: SRAM publishes that “when changing brake pad compounds, it is crucial to replace the rotors as well to achieve optimal performance”. Switching from resin to metal is therefore not a pad purchase. It is a pad and rotor purchase, and the second half of that bill is the larger one.

What none of them publish

No maker on this page publishes a stopping distance, a friction coefficient, a pad life in miles or an operating temperature range. SwissStop publishes a scorecard, but it is SwissStop scoring SwissStop, so we name it and decline to repeat it — a score with the seller’s hand on it is not a measurement, and this site does not print scores at all.

Two consequences. First, there is no honest way to rank pads against each other on performance, so this page ranks them on fitment clarity: how much you can verify before you spend. Second, the specification that actually decides when you buy again is a wear limit, and only Park Tool publishes a usable general one — “generally, the pad material should measure at least 1mm thick”. Check yours with the wheel out, before the ride you would rather not walk home from.

Everything above is either the manufacturer’s own published claim, attributed by name, or a quote from the live Amazon listing marked “Listing:”, all read on 2 September 2026. Where a figure does not exist, the table says so instead of estimating it. How we research sets out the rest of the method.

Shape, compound and who publishes the fitment

The last column is the one that matters most and is never on the packaging: whether the fitment claim comes from the company that made the brake, a specialist with a public catalog, or the Amazon listing alone. All figures read 2 September 2026.

The reason this is first is not that it is the best pad ever made — we have not tested any pad and never will. It is that Shimano publishes a compatibility table naming every caliper this part fits, publishes what it is made of, and publishes a durability comparison against its own cheaper alternative. Nothing else in this category gives a buyer that much to check. If you ride a 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace or GRX hydraulic brake, read that table and then read the organic versus sintered argument before you decide between this and the metal version.

Good

  • Shimano publishes the full caliper list for this exact part number, so you can confirm fitment before you spend anything rather than matching shapes by eye
  • It covers the whole current Shimano hydraulic road range and GRX in one part, which is most of the drop-bar bikes sold in the last several years
  • Shimano's own line-up table states that an "05" pad is 40% more durable than an "03" pad of the same type — this is the 05, and the 03 usually sits beside it at a similar price
  • The aluminum back plate and fins exist to move heat out of the pad, which is the failure mode that matters on a long descent

Less good

  • It is resin. Shimano and SRAM both describe resin as the quieter, cooler-biting compound and metal as the wet and heavy-duty one — if your riding is loaded or long-descent, the L04C below is the honest answer
  • One pair is one wheel. A full brake service is two of these, which roughly doubles what the listing price suggests
  • The finned alloy version costs more than the plain-backed L03A, and the fins are useless if your caliper's pad slot is packed with a resin-only rotor mismatch you have not checked
  • Shimano's compatibility list is long and precise, and "it looks the same" is not a substitute for reading your caliper's model code off the caliper body

Skip it if: Your brake is not on Shimano's published list for this pad. The L-type shape does not fit the B, G, J or K-type calipers further down this page, and a pad that nearly fits is a pad that does not fit.

Treat this as the same product as the top pick with one variable changed. It is here to make a point the category obscures: at the shop counter, resin and metal look like a budget-to-premium ladder, and neither Shimano nor SRAM describes them that way. They are two compounds keyed to heat and water. Pick the one that matches your descents, not the one that matches your budget.

Good

  • Metal compound is what both major makers point you to for wet and heavy-duty use — SRAM's published line is that sintered pads "excel in all conditions, especially in wet and muddy environments"
  • It drops into exactly the same calipers as the top pick, so switching compound does not mean switching brake
  • Shimano publishes the back plate as stainless steel and aluminum, which is more than any aftermarket listing on this page tells you
  • For a heavy rider, a loaded touring bike or a long alpine descent, this is the compound the makers themselves nominate

Less good

  • Metal pads are the noisier, later-biting option when cold — that is the trade, and it is the whole subject of our compound comparison
  • The Amazon listing publishes almost nothing: a part code, two groupset names and the word "Metallica", which appears to be the seller's rendering of "metal". Shimano's table is doing all the work here
  • SRAM publishes a rule that applies to any compound switch: "When changing brake pad compounds, it is crucial to replace the rotors as well to achieve optimal performance." Budget for that before you swap resin to metal
  • Costs more than the resin pad and, on a light bike ridden on rolling terrain, buys you nothing you will notice

Skip it if: Your riding is flat, dry and unloaded, or noise bothers you. You would be paying more for a compound tuned for conditions you do not ride in, and adding a rotor bill to it.

SRAM’s published pad overview is genuinely good: it names four compounds, identifies each by backing-plate color, and explains what each is for. The Amazon listing carries none of that across. So the useful move is to read SRAM’s page first, decide which variant you want, and then check the backing-plate color of what arrives against SRAM’s own key. That is more work than it should be, and it is why this sits below the two Shimano pads rather than above them.

Good

  • It is SRAM's own part for SRAM's own brakes, which removes the entire shape-guessing problem for anyone on a Rival, Force or RED AXS bike
  • One part covers the road hydraulic range and the Level, so a road bike and a second bike on Level brakes take the same spare

  • The listing title reads "Acc Pads. Organic#", which is not a specification by any definition; everything checkable here comes from SRAM's site, not from the page you buy on
  • SRAM names its pad shapes by size — Small Asymmetric, Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large — so there is no part code to cross-check against a Shimano-style table
  • No weight, no back plate material and no wear-limit figure is published anywhere on the listing

Skip it if: You ride Shimano. SRAM's road pad shape and Shimano's L-type are not interchangeable, and the price similarity between them is the trap.

This pick exists to make a comparison possible. Put SwissStop’s compound page next to SRAM’s and you can see what “organic” is actually hiding: a resin-bound composite with ceramic and brass in it. SRAM says organic; SwissStop says Kevlar, ceramic, brass and resin. Same broad family, wildly different amounts of disclosure, and the reader who knows that is harder to sell to.

Good

  • SwissStop names the actual composite — "High performance Kevlar, ceramic, brass and resin composite material" — which is more than either Shimano or SRAM publishes about what is in a pad
  • The published fitment list reaches back to the Avid Elixir range, so it covers older SRAM-braked bikes that the current SRAM part does not name
  • Springs are included, which sounds trivial until you are on the workshop floor looking for the one that pinged off

  • SwissStop also publishes a 0-to-10 scorecard for its own compounds. That is a maker rating its own product, we do not reproduce it, and neither should you treat it as a test result
  • "Disc 35" is a SwissStop shape code. It means nothing on any other brand's packaging, so it adds a third naming system to the two you already have to hold in your head
  • It costs more than SRAM's own pad for the same calipers, and the case for paying that is a published ingredient list rather than a published performance figure
  • Stock was visibly thin when we read the listing — it showed a low unit count rather than open availability

Skip it if: You want the cheapest correct pad. SRAM's own organic pad above fits the same brakes; this is the upgrade you buy because you want to know what is in it, not because anything published proves it stops you faster.

The single most expensive mistake in this category is assuming Shimano makes one pad shape. It publishes at least eight type letters — B, G, J, K, L, N, D and P among them — and a caliper takes exactly one of them. Park Tool’s advice is the correct procedure and worth quoting: “look up your specific caliper model on the manufacturer’s website to find the correct pads.” Your caliper model is printed on the caliper.

Good

  • This is the shape on an enormous number of hybrids, commuters, older cyclocross bikes and hydraulic-braked flat-bar bikes — far more bikes than the road L-type
  • Shimano's published list includes BR-RS785 and BR-R785, the early road hydraulic calipers, which catches out riders who assume any road brake takes an L-type pad
  • The 40% durability note applies here too: the G03S sits beside this at a lower price and Shimano's own table says it wears out sooner
  • A stainless back plate and an included spring, from the company that made the caliper

Less good

  • No fins and a stainless rather than aluminum back plate, so it sheds heat less well than the finned road pad — fine for commuting, less so for a loaded descent

Skip it if: Your caliper is a current road or GRX hydraulic. Those take the L-type at the top of this page, and Shimano's two lists have no caliper in common.

Included because it is the honest alternative and because it illustrates the page’s whole problem from the other side. Kool-Stop’s Shimano disc pad range runs to two dozen part numbers. The Amazon listing collapses all of that into one word, “Deore”. That is easier to read and harder to verify, and which of those two matters more is a genuine judgment call rather than an obvious one.

Good

  • The listing does something unusual and useful: it names the caliper family in plain words — "Shape: Shimano Deore HYD/Mech" — rather than making you decode a letter
  • Kool-Stop is a long-standing brake pad specialist rather than an anonymous seller, and it publishes a full Shimano disc pad catalog
  • Covers both the hydraulic and mechanical Deore calipers in one listing, which is genuinely convenient on a bike whose brake you cannot identify
  • Organic, which is the right default for a commuter that mostly brakes gently and often

Less good

  • Kool-Stop's own catalog is organized by part number — KS-D600 through KS-D640 — and this listing states none, so you cannot confirm which of its Shimano shapes will arrive
  • The compound is described only as "organic". No composition, no back plate material, no weight
  • It costs more than Shimano's own G05S-RX resin pad for what is broadly the same job
  • "Deore" has covered many calipers across many years; the words on the listing are more helpful than a letter but still less precise than a Shimano caliper code

Skip it if: You already know your Shimano caliper code. If you do, buy the Shimano part that names it — you get a published fitment list and a published durability comparison instead of a shape description.

Telling someone to buy a bike and then never telling them what its consumables are is how a site leaves a reader stranded. If you own one, this is your pad.

Good

  • Cable disc brakes are still everywhere at the entry end, and the BB5 in particular is what the cheapest complete gravel bikes ship with — including the top pick on our gravel beginners roundup
  • Steel-backed organic is the sensible pairing for a mechanical caliper, where lever force is limited and an easy-biting pad does more good than a high-heat one
  • SRAM's published note that organic pads bed in faster is worth something on a bike that gets ridden the day the parts arrive
  • Cable calipers are serviceable at the roadside with basic tools, which is a real argument for staying on this system rather than upgrading away from it

Less good

  • Amazon lists BB5 pads and BB7/Juicy pads as separate products. Buy the one that names your caliper; do not assume the two Avid mechanical brakes share a pad
  • Organic in persistent wet is the compound both makers steer you away from, and a cable caliper already gives you less power to start with
  • On a cable brake the pads are set by dials on the caliper, so fitting new pads means re-setting the caliper rather than just dropping them in
  • The listing publishes no thickness, no weight and no wear limit — Park Tool's general 1mm minimum is all you have to work with

Skip it if: Your caliper is a BB7 or a Juicy. It is a different listing and a different part, and this is the single easiest wrong-pad purchase to make in the whole category.

We are not going to pretend this is a bad product — we have no evidence either way, and plenty of riders run pads like these for years. What we can tell you is exactly how much you can verify before you buy, which is: the caliper family, and nothing else. On a commuter’s spare set that is a reasonable trade. On the brake that has to work on a wet descent, buy the pad whose maker publishes a table.

Good

  • It names a Shimano pad family rather than a vague promise, which puts it ahead of most unbranded listings in this aisle
  • The B-type family covers Shimano's entry hydraulic calipers — BR-MT200, MT400, MT500 and the older M-series — which is what a large share of hybrids and budget e-bikes run
  • It is a fraction of the price of the branded pads here, which matters on a bike that eats pads and is not worth premium consumables
  • Cheap enough to keep a spare set in the drawer, which is the single best defense against riding on worn pads

Less good

  • The compound line reads "Resin, Metal", which describes two different things and specifies neither. You cannot know from the listing which one you are buying
  • We could find no manufacturer specification anywhere to check the listing against. There is no maker's page, no part number system and no published fitment table
  • Park Tool warns that "there may be compatibility issues with certain rotor material and pad material combinations" — that warning bites hardest on a pad whose material is not stated
  • The B-type shape does not fit a road or GRX caliper. On a price-sorted search page this sits next to pads that do, and the price is what people buy on

Skip it if: The brake is one you rely on in traffic or on descents, or your caliper is not on the B-series list. Shimano's own G05S-RX costs a little more and comes with a published fitment table and a published durability figure.

What actually decides this purchase

Read the caliper, not the bike.The model code is printed on the caliper body — something like BR-R7070 or BR-M6000 on a Shimano, or a name like Rival or Level on a SRAM. That code is the answer. The bike’s model year, groupset name and price bracket are not.

Buy two pairs, not one. Almost every listing here is one pair, which is one wheel. A bike has two brakes, they wear at different rates, and the rear will surprise you.

New pads out of the box do not stop as well as bedded ones, and the first descent is the wrong place to discover that.

How do I know which disc brake pads fit my bike?

Read the model code printed on the caliper and look it up on the brake maker’s site. Shimano publishes a table matching every pad type letter to every caliper it fits; SRAM publishes pad sizes and identifies compounds by backing-plate color. Park Tool’s published fallback, if you cannot find the code, is to match the shape of your old pad exactly — but it says such a pad will “likely” work, not certainly.

What is the difference between Shimano 03 and 05 brake pads?

Durability, and Shimano publishes the figure: an “05” pad is 40% more durable than an “03” pad of the same type. They fit the same calipers and share the same compound and back plate within a type, so where both are available and similarly priced, the 05 is the better buy. It applies across the range, including the L-type road pads and the G-type mountain and trekking pads.

Can I put mountain bike brake pads in a road caliper?

Not if the shapes differ, and on Shimano they do. The current road and GRX hydraulic calipers take the L-type pad; the two-piston mountain and trekking calipers take the G-type. Shimano’s published table has no caliper appearing on both lists. The confusing exception is the older road hydraulic calipers BR-RS785 and BR-R785, which Shimano lists under the G-type — another reason to read the caliper rather than assume from the handlebar.

Do I need new rotors when I change brake pad compound?

SRAM says yes: “When changing brake pad compounds, it is crucial to replace the rotors as well to achieve optimal performance.” The reasoning is that pad material transfers onto the rotor surface during bedding in, so a rotor carrying resin deposits is not a clean surface for a metal pad. Budget for it before you decide to switch, because the rotors cost more than the pads.

Nobody publishes the data that would answer that, which is itself the answer. There is no published stopping distance, friction coefficient or pad life in miles for any pad on this page. What the money reliably buys is disclosure: Shimano tells you the caliper list and the durability comparison, SwissStop tells you what the compound is made of, and the cheapest listings tell you a caliper family and nothing else. Buy the correct shape first; pay for published information second.

Why are my new brake pads squealing?

The two common causes are contamination and pads that have not bedded in. Park Tool lists contamination symptoms as a squeal, extra lever effort, or a smearing darkness on the rotor and pads. SRAM’s bed-in procedure — controlled slowing to heat the surface and transfer pad material evenly — takes about ten minutes and is what it calls the only proven route to quieter braking. Do that before assuming the pads are faulty.
