You are not buying a pedal. You are buying a cleat system, and the cleat is what decides float, walkability and what it costs to change your mind. Here is what each system publishes, and eight pedals ranked on it.

Commuters, and anyone nervous about being clipped in

Almost every road pedal comparison ranks on weight, and almost none of the makers publish one. Of the eight pedals here, exactly three carry a manufacturer’s weight figure, and the three are not measured the same way. That is the state of published data in this category, and it means a weight ranking would be mostly invention.

There is a better axis, and it is the one that actually decides whether you are still riding these pedals in three years: float. Float is how far your foot can rotate while clipped in, and it is the difference between a knee that tolerates ten thousand pedal strokes an hour and one that does not. Every maker on this page publishes a float figure. What almost nobody explains is that the figure belongs to the cleat, not the pedal — so the real question is not “how much float does this pedal have” but “how cheaply can I change it when the first setting is wrong”.

Four systems, and what each one publishes

Shimano SPD-SL (three-bolt). Shimano publishes three cleats and says who each is for. The SM-SH11 is yellow, has a “six-degree float range (three degrees in each direction)” and pivots at the center of the cleat; Shimano names it for riders “new to cycling, experiencing knee pain, lack flexibility”. The SM-SH12 is blue, with “two degrees of float (one degree in each direction)” and a pivot at the frontof the cleat, which changes where the movement happens rather than just how much of it there is. The SM-SH10 is red and has “0 Degrees of Float”, described as “100% fixed in position” and “optimal for sprinters, professional athletes”. Every SPD-SL pedal on this page ships with the SM-SH11.

LOOK Keo (three-bolt). LOOK publishes its KEO GRIP cleat in “0° / 4.5° / 9° (black, grey or red)”, with 4 mm of lateral and 9 mm of longitudinal adjustment and a published 60 g for the pair with fastenings. That 4.5° middle option sits in the gap between Shimano’s 2° and 6°, which is a real reason to pick Keo if you have found both Shimano settings wrong. LOOK does not publish which of the three ships with either pedal.

Speedplay (four-bolt, three-bolt adapter). Wahoo publishes float as “Adjustable from 0° to 15°” and, separately, release angle as “Micro Adjustable from 0° to 7.5°”. Those are two independent settings on one cleat, which no other system here offers at any price. Wahoo also publishes what nobody else does: a Q factor of 53 mm, a cornering clearance of 39°, and two stack heights depending on whether your shoe is drilled three holes or four.

Shimano SPD (two-bolt).The mountain-bike standard, on road pedals. Shimano publishes “4 degrees of float” and a “13-degree clip-out angle” for both the single-release SM-SH51 and the multi-release SM-SH56. There is no float choice at all — what you choose instead is the release behavior. The trade you are making is float options for the ability to walk, because an SPD cleat is recessed into the sole.

What changing your mind costs

This is the number nobody puts in a comparison table, and it is the one that separates the systems. In SPD-SL and Keo, changing float means buying a cleat — the cheapest item on any of these pages, available in three published angles, and a five-minute job with a hex key. In Speedplay, changing float means turning a screw, which is better still. Leaving Speedplay, however, means new cleats and possibly new shoes, because the four-bolt pattern is its own.

So the honest ranking is not “which pedal is best”. It is: how much fit can this system give you, how much of it is published before you spend, and what does it cost to get it wrong the first time. On that basis SPD-SL wins on cost and availability, Speedplay wins on precision, Keo wins on how much of the pedal’s own geometry is published, and SPD wins the moment you have to walk anywhere.

Stack height and stance, published by two makers out of three

Stack heightis the distance from the pedal axle to the sole of your shoe. It sets your effective saddle height, which is why it matters if you are switching systems on a bike you have already had fitted. LOOK publishes it for both its pedals — 17.8 mm for the Keo Classic 3 as 11.5 mm of pedal plus 6.3 mm of cleat, and 17.3 mm for the Keo 2 Max. Wahoo publishes 11.5 mm on a three-hole shoe and 8.5 mm on a four-hole one. Shimano publishes no stack height for any road pedal on this page.

Stance— how far apart your feet sit, usually discussed as Q factor — is published even less often. Wahoo states 53 mm. Shimano publishes an axle length instead, offering the Ultegra PD-R8000 in a standard 52 mm or a version 4 mm longer. Nobody else here publishes anything. If a bike fitter has told you your stance needs changing, those two products are the only ones on this page that can act on it.

The weights are published and still not comparable

Three of these publish a weight, and the three are measured differently. LOOK gives 350 g for the Keo Classic 3 and 328 g for the Keo 2 Max, explicitly as the pair including cleats. Wahoo gives 232 g per pair. Shimano gives 248 g per pair for the Ultegra PD-R8000 and 279 g a pair for the PD-ES600, without stating whether cleats are in that figure. A cleat set is not a rounding error at these weights, so sorting those five numbers into a league table would produce an order that means nothing. We have printed each figure with its source and left them unsorted.

Why five of the eight are Shimano

Because Shimano makes SPD-SL and SPD, both of those standards need a beginner option and an upgrade option, and no other manufacturer covers the same span on Amazon at prices worth writing about. It is a real concentration and it is worth naming rather than disguising. The consequence for you as a reader is a fitting question, not a brand one: three of the eight are SPD-SL and take the same cleat, two more are Keo and bolt to the same three-hole shoe with a different cleat, two are SPD on a two-hole sole, and one is Speedplay’s own four-hole pattern. If you already own three-bolt road shoes, five of these eight are open to you and three are not.

What that concentration also means is that this page is not a fair contest between brands. It is a map of what is currently buyable, which is a smaller and less exciting set than the category as a whole.

What we cannot tell you

Nobody publishes a stiffness figure, a bearing life, an engagement force or a power-transfer measurement for any pedal on this page, so the usual claims — stiffer, more efficient, better power transfer — have no numbers under them from any of these makers, and none from us either. We have not ridden any of these pedals. Every figure above is a manufacturer’s own published claim, attributed by name, or a quote from the live Amazon listing marked “Listing:”, all read on 10 September 2026. How we research sets out the rest of the method, including why there are no scores on this site.

Cleat standard, published float, and who publishes the geometry

Float is a property of the cleat, so the middle column is what the system offers, not what the pedal has. Weights are printed as each maker states them and are not comparable— LOOK includes cleats in its figure and the others do not say. All figures read 10 September 2026.

Three of the four systems publish a float figure you can act on; only two publish the pedal’s own geometry. That is not a quality judgment — a Shimano pedal is not worse for having no published stack height. It is a statement about how much you can check before you spend, which is the only thing we can honestly rank on.

This is first because of what Shimano publishes around it, not because we have ridden it — we have ridden none of these and never will. Buying a road pedal is buying a cleat standard, and SPD-SL is the standard with three published float options, the widest shoe compatibility and the cheapest spares. If the 6° cleat in the box turns out to feel vague under load, a 2° SM-SH12 is a small purchase rather than a new pedal. That optionality is the whole argument, and it is the argument the marketing never makes.

Good

  • Shimano publishes three SPD-SL cleats, at 0°, 2° and 6° of float, and this pedal takes any of them — so the fit is a decision you can revise later for the price of a cleat instead of the price of a pedal
  • The SM-SH11 in the box is the 6° cleat with a centered pivot, which Shimano describes as its option for riders who are "new to cycling, experiencing knee pain, lack flexibility". That is the right cleat to start on and it is the one you get.
  • SPD-SL is the most widely stocked three-bolt standard in the US, which matters on the Saturday you snap a cleat bolt and need a replacement from a shop rather than a courier
  • Shimano publishes the construction rather than adjectives: a carbon-composite body, a stainless steel body plate, sealed cartridge axles and wide bearing placement to spread load

Less good

  • Shimano publishes no weight for this pedal, while it publishes one for the Ultegra above it — so the most common reason people upgrade cannot be checked against a Shimano figure at this tier
  • Single-sided. An SPD-SL pedal hangs nose-down and has to be flipped with your toe before it will take a cleat, which is a small nuisance at every set of lights and a real one on a hill start.
  • The three-bolt cleat is a plastic wedge proud of the sole. Walking on it wears it out and it is genuinely slippery on tile and metal.
  • The cleat is the consumable, not the pedal, and it wears silently — most riders run road cleats far past the point where release has become unpredictable

Skip it if: You want to walk around in your cycling shoes. A three-bolt road cleat is not a walkable cleat, and the two SPD picks lower down this page exist for exactly that reason.

If you have had knee pain on a bike, read Wahoo’s published specification carefully, because it is the only one in this category that treats fit as two separate adjustments. Float is how far your foot rotates while clipped in. Release is how far it has to rotate before it comes out. Every other system here bundles those together in a cleat you buy once: Shimano’s SM-SH11 is 6° of float with a 13° clip-out and that is that. Speedplay publishes 0–15° of float and 0–7.5° of release, set independently, on the same cleat. That is a genuinely different product, and it is why this sits second rather than eighth despite being the odd one out.

Good

  • Wahoo publishes float adjustable from 0° to 15° and, separately, a release angle micro-adjustable from 0° to 7.5°. No other system on this page separates those two settings at all — everywhere else, changing float means buying a different cleat.
  • Dual-sided entry. The pedal is symmetrical, so there is no wrong face and nothing to flip, which is the single biggest usability difference on this page.
  • It is the only pick here that publishes a Q factor (53 mm) and a cornering clearance (39°), and it publishes stack height twice — 11.5 mm on a three-hole shoe, 8.5 mm on a four-hole one
  • Wahoo publishes the cleat adjustment as well: up to 13 mm fore-aft and 8 mm side to side, with a walkable cleat adaptor included in the box

Less good

  • The mechanism lives in the cleat, not the pedal — the opposite of every other system here. The expensive, moving, serviceable part is the one bolted under your shoe and walked on.
  • The published 8.5 mm stack height needs a four-hole shoe. Most road shoes are drilled three-bolt, and on those you get an adapter plate and the 11.5 mm figure instead.
  • Nothing else fits it. The four-bolt Speedplay cleat is unique to the system, so leaving it later means new cleats and possibly new shoes — the most expensive change of mind on this page.
  • It is the least commonly stocked system here. A cleat you need before Sunday's ride is more likely to be a mail order than a shelf in a shop.

Skip it if: You want the cheapest route to being clipped in, or you want a system your local shop keeps spares for. SPD-SL and Keo cleats sit on every shop wall; these do not.

The interesting thing about Shimano’s own page for this pedal is that it does not sell it on weight or stiffness, because there is nothing to say. It sells it on entry: a bigger target and a lighter spring. That is the correct pitch for a first road pedal and it is the honest reason to buy this instead of the 105 — not because it is cheaper, but because the thing it does better is the thing a new rider actually struggles with.

Good

  • Same SM-SH11 cleat and same shoes as the 105 above, so the whole ecosystem argument applies in full at a much lower price
  • Shimano publishes the actual beginner feature rather than implying it: "Lighter spring tension and a larger entry target make it easy to clip in and out". That is the specification that decides whether your first month is frightening.
  • Nothing is wasted if you upgrade. The cleats, the shoes and the muscle memory all carry straight over to a 105 or an Ultegra.
  • Shimano still publishes the extra-wide platform and describes the pedal as carrying "features from the top of the line pedals"

Less good

  • Shimano publishes no weight, no body material and no stack height for it. The only specification you can check before buying is the cleat in the box.
  • Shimano's own copy for this pedal says "Wide, low-profile cleats make walking easy". They are still three-bolt road cleats, and we would not describe any three-bolt cleat as walkable — compare the two SPD picks below if walking matters.
  • A lighter spring is a beginner feature and also a ceiling: a heavy rider sprinting out of the saddle can pull out of a soft binding
  • Single-sided, like every SPD-SL pedal here, so the flipping problem is unchanged

Skip it if: You already know you want zero float or a firm binding. The entire point of this pedal is the soft, forgiving end of the range.

LOOK’s specification page is the most detailed of any maker here, and it exposes something worth knowing: a Keo system puts a 6.3 mm cleat under the shoe and an 11.5 mm pedal under that, for a published 17.8 mm total. Speedplay publishes 11.5 mm. Shimano publishes nothing. If you are changing systems on a bike you have already fitted, stack height is the number that quietly changes your effective saddle height, and only two of the four systems here will tell you what it is.

Good

  • LOOK publishes contact area, platform width and stack height for this pedal. Shimano publishes none of those three for any of its road pedals on this page.
  • The Keo cleat is published in 0°, 4.5° and 9° of float, so the middle option lands between Shimano's 2° and 6° — genuinely useful if 6° feels vague and 2° feels locked
  • LOOK publishes the cleat's adjustment too: 4 mm lateral, 9 mm longitudinal, and 60 g for the pair with fastenings
  • A composite body on a chromoly spindle is a sensible, serviceable combination at this price, and LOOK states both rather than leaving you to guess

Less good

  • LOOK publishes which cleat family is in the box (KEO GRIP) but not which of the three float angles it is — the single number you most want before buying is the one not published
  • Keo and SPD-SL both bolt to the same three-hole shoe, but the cleats are not interchangeable. Committing to Keo means Keo cleats for as long as you keep the pedals.
  • At 350 g the pair with cleats, it is heavier than the Keo 2 Max further down, which is the more expensive pedal in the same range
  • Single-sided, and the same non-walkable three-bolt wedge under the foot

Skip it if: Your shoes already wear SPD-SL cleats and you get on with them. There is no published performance difference here big enough to justify re-cleating a pair of shoes.

The axle length is the part worth paying attention to, and it is buried at the bottom of Shimano’s page. Stance width — how far apart your feet sit — is a fit variable most riders never adjust because almost nothing lets them. Wahoo publishes a fixed 53 mm Q factor; Shimano offers this pedal in two axle lengths 4 mm apart. If your heels rub the crank arms, or a bike fitter has told you your stance is too narrow, that option is worth more than every gram on the page.

Good

  • Shimano publishes 248 grams per pair and a choice of a 52 mm standard axle or one 4 mm longer. That axle option is a real fix for wide hips or a heel that clips the crank arm, and almost nothing else in road pedals offers it.
  • Same SPD-SL cleat, same shoes, same three published float options as the 105 — the step up costs nothing in compatibility
  • Shimano publishes the materials: carbon composite body, stainless steel body plate, with an extra-wide platform for load distribution
  • If weight genuinely matters to you, this is the only pedal on the page where the maker will commit to a number

Less good

  • Shimano publishes no weight for the 105 PD-R7000, so the usual "lighter than 105" upgrade argument cannot be checked against a Shimano figure at all
  • It costs substantially more than the 105 for a difference that, on the published evidence, is grams and an axle option
  • Listings for road pedals rarely say which axle length is in the box. If the +4 mm version is your reason for buying, confirm it with the seller before you order.
  • Single-sided, and the same three-bolt cleat you cannot walk in

Skip it if: You are buying it to go faster. Nothing Shimano publishes supports that; the stance option and the stated weight are the two real reasons to choose it.

This is the one pick on the page where two products from the same maker are published to the same measurement standard, which makes it the only place a spec sheet actually decides something. LOOK publishes 500 mm² here against 400 mm² for the Classic 3, on the same 60 mm platform width. What LOOK does not publish is what those 100 mm² do for you, and neither does anyone else, so treat it as a shape difference rather than a performance one.

Good

  • 500 mm² of published contact area against 400 mm² for the Classic 3 — same company, same measurement, a 25% larger platform. That like-for-like comparison is rare in this category.
  • Lighter than the cheaper Classic 3 despite the bigger platform: 328 g against 350 g, both published as the pair including cleats
  • Slightly lower stack too, 17.3 mm against 17.8 mm, which only matters if you are re-using an existing saddle height — but if you are, it is the number to have
  • Same KEO cleat, same three published float angles, same published 4 mm and 9 mm cleat adjustment

Less good

  • LOOK publishes no evidence that a larger contact area does anything measurable. It is a bigger number from the seller with no test behind it — including none from us.
  • Roughly double the Classic 3 for a platform difference you are unlikely to feel through the stiff sole a road shoe already has
  • Same Keo lock-in, and the same unpublished question of which float angle is actually in the box
  • Single-sided, and 22 g of published weight saving is not a reason to buy anything

Skip it if: You are still deciding whether Keo is your system at all. Start with the Classic 3 — same cleat, same shoes, a fraction of the outlay if you change your mind.

  • Shimano publishes 4° of float for the SPD cleat and there is no other option — SPD gives you one float figure and two release modes, where SPD-SL gives you three float figures
  • Single-sided, and an SPD mechanism on one face of a wide body is a smaller target to find with your toe than an SPD-SL nose
  • SPD shoes are drilled two-bolt. If your shoes are three-bolt road shoes, this pedal is not an option without buying shoes too.
  • The argument for a three-bolt road cleat — a larger, stiffer interface under the ball of the foot — is real, even though nobody publishes a number for it

Skip it if: You never get off the bike. If your riding is road miles and nothing else, the larger three-bolt interface is the better tool for the job.

The cleat is the reason this is on a road pedal page at all. Shimano ships it with the SM-SH56, the multi-release cleat, rather than the single-release SM-SH51 that comes with most SPD pedals. Multi-release means your foot comes out when twisted in either direction or lifted and twisted, instead of only the one learned motion. For a rider whose actual fear is falling over at a junction, that is the specification that matters, and it is published.

Good

  • It removes the decision. Cycling shoes today, work shoes tomorrow, same bike, no tools, no compromise on either day.
  • It ships with the SM-SH56, which Shimano publishes as releasing "by twisting your foot in either direction or by lifting and twisting your heel" — the most forgiving cleat Shimano makes and the right one for a first clipless month
  • Published adjustable entry and release tension, so the binding can be set soft and firmed up across a season rather than bought at one setting
  • Shimano markets it for indoor cycling as well as urban riding, which makes it the sane pedal for a bike that lives on a trainer half the year

Less good

  • It is a compromise twice over: heavier than a dedicated road pedal, and a smaller, less grippy platform than a real flat pedal
  • Shimano publishes no weight for it
  • Only one face clips in, so the flipping problem is worse rather than better — you have to find the correct side, not just the correct orientation
  • 4° of float, with no option to change it, like every SPD pedal here

Skip it if: You already ride clipped in with confidence and your bike is a road bike. This is a commuter and beginner pedal and it does not pretend otherwise.

What actually decides this purchase

Check the sole of your shoe before you buy anything.Three holes in a triangle is SPD-SL or Keo. Two holes in a recess is SPD. Four holes in a square is Speedplay’s native pattern. The pedal has to match the shoe, and the shoe is the more expensive of the two to replace.

Start with float, not without it.Every Shimano pedal here ships with the 6° SM-SH11 or a 4° SPD cleat, and Speedplay’s is adjustable out of the box. That is the makers’ own judgment, not ours — Shimano explicitly names the SM-SH11 for riders who are new, in pain, or short on flexibility. Zero float is a preference to grow into, if at all. LOOK does not publish which of its three angles ships with either Keo pedal, so ask the seller if it matters to you.

Wind the tension out before the first ride. Every clipless pedal here has a release-tension screw. Set it soft, ride until clipping out is automatic, and firm it up over a season. A factory-tension binding has caught out more first-time riders than any other adjustment on a bike.

Buy the cleats with the pedals, and then buy a spare set. Cleats are the consumable, they wear silently, and a worn road cleat releases unpredictably. They are also the cheapest part of the system, which makes running them to death a false economy.

Do not walk on three-bolt cleats if you can avoid it.A road cleat is a plastic wedge standing proud of the sole, and pavement grit destroys it faster than riding does. If your rides involve getting off — commuting, touring, a cafe — the SPD picks here are not a downgrade, they are the correct tool.

Mark the cleat position before you unbolt an old one.Draw around it with a fine marker. LOOK publishes 4 mm of lateral and 9 mm of longitudinal adjustment on its cleats and Wahoo publishes up to 13 mm fore-aft, which is a lot of room to get wrong in a hurry on a Saturday morning.

Common questions

Should I use SPD or SPD-SL pedals on a road bike?

It depends entirely on whether you get off the bike. SPD-SL gives a bigger interface under the ball of your foot and three published float options (0°, 2° and 6°); SPD gives one published float figure (4°) and a recessed cleat you can walk on. How much float do I need in a road pedal?

Start with the most your system offers and reduce it only if you have a reason. Shimano names its 6° SM-SH11 for riders who are “new to cycling, experiencing knee pain, lack flexibility” and its 0° SM-SH10 for “sprinters, professional athletes”. LOOK publishes 0°, 4.5° and 9°; Speedplay publishes anything from 0° to 15° on a screw. Nobody publishes evidence that less float makes you faster, and knee pain from a foot locked at the wrong angle is well documented.

Can I use any brand of cleat with any pedal?

No. SPD-SL, Keo and Speedplay cleats all bolt to shoes but none of them work in another system’s pedal, even though SPD-SL and Keo use the same three-bolt shoe pattern. SPD is a separate two-bolt pattern again. Third-party cleats sold as compatible do exist; the float and release figures quoted on this page are the pedal maker’s own, for its own cleats, and we have no basis to extend them to a copy.

Are Speedplay pedals worth the extra money?

They buy you two things that are published and nothing that is not: independent adjustment of float (0° to 15°) and release angle (0° to 7.5°), and dual-sided entry so there is no pedal to flip. If knee comfort has been a problem or you find clipping in awkward, those are real. If neither applies, you are paying more for a less commonly stocked cleat.

Can I put mountain bike pedals on a road bike?

Yes — the pedal thread is the same 9/16 inch on essentially all adult bikes, and SPD pedals are a common and sensible choice on a road bike. What changes is the shoe: SPD needs a two-bolt sole. How often should I replace road bike cleats?

No manufacturer on this page publishes a cleat life in miles or months, so anyone quoting you one is guessing. What is checkable is behavior: if the release point has become vague, if your foot moves more than the published float, or if the cleat’s contact edges are visibly rounded or thinned, replace it. Cleats are the cheapest part of the system and the only one whose failure puts you on the floor.

Do more expensive pedals make you faster?

Nothing published by Shimano, LOOK or Wahoo says so. None of them publishes a stiffness number, a bearing-friction figure or a power-transfer measurement for any pedal on this page. What the money demonstrably buys is a published weight, an axle-length option, a larger stated contact area, or adjustable float — useful things, none of which is speed. Buy the fit and the cleat availability first.
